Bio
Martin Witzenrath is Professor of Respiratory Medicine and Director of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at Charité – University Medicine Berlin. He also serves as board member of the German Respiratory Society. Martin´s research addresses the molecular mechanisms of infection-induced lung injury regarding host defense, inflammatory response and endothelial barrier dysfunction in a translational bench-to-bedside approach.
His projects aim at defining novel therapeutic targets to attenuate lung and extra-pulmonary organ injury and to foster organ regeneration in acute lung inflammation, in a translational bench-to-bedside approach. He has extensive experience in experimental models of pneumonia and ARDS, including animal model systems and alternative methods (e.g. human lung tissue, organoids, lung-on-chip). Based on his experimental research, he has been conducting numerous multi-center interventional clinical trials, and he is centrally involved in large-scale observational studies.
